'More should be done' to help asbestosis victims

Industry should do more to help the victims of asbestosis, it has been suggested.
According to the Co-operative Insurance, firms should support government plans to help such individuals obtain compensation for their suffering.
The company noted that it often takes a long time for illnesses caused by exposure to asbestos to manifest, making it hard for people to take legal action against those responsible.
For this reason, cover providers must work together to ensure that sufferers and their families can access money, whether it is provided by an individual insurer or the industry as a whole, it said.
Head of general insurance at the Co-operative Insurance David Neave commented: "If a company's insurer proves impossible to trace, we believe that it is only fair and ethical for insurers to fund a pool enabling these victims to make a claim."
There are a number of diseases those exposed to asbestos can go on to develop, including pleural plaques - which is a form of scarring of the outer lining of the lungs - asbestosis and mesothelioma.
