New paternity leave proposals 'are welcome'

New proposals concerning paternity leave have been welcomed by one individual.
According to Katja Hall, director of employment policy for the Confederation of British Industry, it is right that new fathers should have more time off work following the birth of their children.
She made her comments in response to a pledge made in the Labour Party manifesto, in which the organisation said that if it remains in power, it will extend the number of weeks dads would be able to stay at home after their partners give birth, from two to four weeks with full pay.
Employees would be given the chance to take this flexibly over the first years of the child's life and parents would be able to share the additional two weeks between them if they wished.
Ms Hall remarked: "Traditional caring roles are changing and it is right that legislation reflects this."
If the plans come into effect, families would have more choice about how they share out childcare, she added.
Employment partner at Lamport Bassitt Jonathan Gray said: "The Additional Paternity Leave and Pay scheme came into force on April 6th 2010 and will apply to parents of children due on or after April 3rd 2011.
"The scheme is to provide fathers with the right to up to six months' leave to care for a child, if the child's mother returns to work without exercising their full entitlement to maternity leave.
"Some of that leave may be paid if it is taken during the mother's maternity pay period. Similar provisions will also apply for adoptive parents."
