Employers 'failing to conform to fire safety laws'

A significant number of firms in the UK are failing to adhere to fire safety laws, it has been suggested.
According to insurer RSA, eight million workers could be at risk as a result.
The firm - which has operations around the world and claims to have more than 20 million customers - said that a quarter of staff members have never participated in a full fire evacuation drill, while one in 20 employees admitted their place of work had no marked emergency exits.
It also pointed out that in October 2006, the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order transferred responsibility for fire safety away from the fire service to the owners of companies.
Commenting on the issue, global business director at RSA David Geer said: "[Firms must] make sure that staff are made acutely aware of fire safety procedures and the location of their nearest fire exit."
He added that those which fail to are risking their workers' lives.
