Local authority to issue compensation over poisonous dust

A local authority is set to issue compensation to a number of families whose children have birth defects due to chemicals from a steel works.
Corby Borough Council, which is situated in Grosvenor House, Corby in Northamptonshire, has been judged to have been negligent in its clean up of the facility, the BBC reports.
Because of this, pregnant women came into contact with hazardous substances and their offspring were born with a range of limb deformities.
The amount those affected will receive is currently being negotiated, with retired judge Sir Henry Brooke involved in the discussions.
Chris Mallender, chief executive at the council, said: "In the circumstances we feel that it's better that we try and find a middle ground, we settle in a way that's fair to the families."
However, any deal must also take into account tax payers in the area, he added.
Both sides are aiming to achieve an out-of-court settlement.
