Britons 'prepared to make false insurance claims'

The recession has made people in the UK more likely to attempt to defraud an insurance provider, research has shown. According to moneysupermarket.com, more than 400,000 Britons have already made a false claim on home insurance. And six per cent of respondents told the price comparison site they would consider such an action - up from five per cent in August 2009. Head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com Julie Owens warned of the dangers of false or exaggerated claims on policies, stating: "No matter how tempting, fabricating a claim for a payout is not only wholly inadvisable but it is also illegal and you could face being prosecuted as a result." The study also revealed that 15 per cent of Brits do not have home insurance in place. Last week, AA Insurance highlighted the growing trend of car thefts following domestic burglaries - with more than 19,400 vehicles being taken after keys were obtained in this way in 2008-09.
