Assets built up before marriage 'should be excluded from divorce deals'

Assets accumulated by individuals prior to their weddings should not be included in subsequent divorce settlements.
This is the opinion of family lawyer Baroness Deech, who suggested that such wealth should be excluded under European-style laws, the Times reports.
Such changes would stop expensive and hostile legal battles and would put so-called "gold diggers" off getting hitched for financial gain.
She stated that she is "dismayed" that people can get married for a short period of time, have no career and then receive millions of pounds.
Baroness Deech added: "It sends the message that if you marry a rich man you are made for life. It is highly offensive."
She went on to call for a system under which it would be possible to work out what each side of a separating couple will receive without going to court.
Recently, the European Commission proposed new regulations under which people getting divorced would be able to choose which country's laws apply to their separations.
