Divorces 'take a long time to recover from'

People take a long time to recover from the emotional strain of separating from a spouse, it has been suggested.

A survey of divorcees conducted by fifties.com revealed that the average length of time it takes to get over such splits is 17 months and 26 days.

Six in ten of those polled said a sense of failure was one of the hardest things to deal with, while 20 per cent noted that a feeling of loss was harder to cope with than the practical issues.

It was also found that one in five respondents did not think they would ever get over their divorces.

A spokesperson for fifties.com said: "Divorce is tough for everyone involved and it does take a considerable amount of time before you feel ready to move on."

He added that people differ and it takes longer for some to recover than others.

Recently, a survey commissioned by the Housing Federation revealed that young couples in the UK are delaying getting married because they are not able to afford to buy homes.
