Employees given legal right to request training

Workers in the UK have been given the right to request training or time to study, it has been announced.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has implemented the Time to Train initiative, under which staff members in firms which employ more than 250 people have the legal power to ask for time off to take up relevant personal development.
In order to qualify, training should improve the employee's effectiveness in their job and should contribute to improved business performance.
Commenting on the scheme, skills minister Kevin Brennan - who took up his current position in June 2009 - said it provides an opportunity to empower people to speak about development.
He added: "[Time to Train] will give [workers] the confidence to ask about training and skills, allowing them to take control of their own careers."
Mr Brennan went on to state that while many firms are good at providing such opportunities, the government wanted to make sure all businesses are advising staff about what is on offer.
