New EU legislation 'may simplify divorce law'

New legislation which is being debated in the European Union (EU) may make divorce law more straightforward, it has been suggested.
The European Commission has proposed a new rule that would enable couples to choose which country's laws apply to their separation.
The news provider states that ten countries, including Britain, want the changes to take place.
However, EU MPs and governments still have to debate the idea.
It is hoped that if the changes come into effect it will prevent so-called "divorce shopping", whereby one spouse gains the upper-hand over their partner.
In situations when couples disagree about the jurisdiction, courts will be able to decide which law applies in their case.
"Thousands of couples find themselves in difficult personal situations because national legal systems have so far failed to provide clear answers," stated EU justice commissioner Viviane Reding, who is from Luxembourg.
