Govt 'must get new paternity employment laws right'

The government must be careful when it is implementing new paternity employment legislation, it has been noted.

According to Katja Hall, director of employment policy at the Confederation of British Industry, the new rules should not be over-complicated as this would be detrimental to the business community.

She made her comments after the Labour administration's announcement recently that new mothers will be able to transfer the second half of their year-long maternity leave to the father.

The laws are due to come into effect next year, giving companies a chance to adapt to the changes.

Ms Hall remarked: "We recognise the need for greater gender equality when it comes to childcare responsibilities, but the government must get these new rules right and not create a bureaucratic tangle."

She added that the legal alterations being implemented in the UK will provide parents with more flexibility to adapt childcare to their own situations.

Employment partner at Lamport Bassitt Jonathan Gray commented: "It is intended that the Additional Paternity Leave and Pay scheme will come into force on April 6th 2010 and will apply to parents of children due on or after April 3rd 2011.

"The scheme is to provide fathers with the right to up to six months' leave to care for a child, if the child's mother returns to work without exercising their full entitlement to maternity leave.

"Some of that leave may be paid if it is taken during the mother's maternity pay period. Similar provisions will also apply for adoptive parents."
