Concerns raised over tower crane safety scheme

Concerns have been raised over a safety scheme for those operating in the tower crane industry.

Developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the regulations are designed to improve the safety of such devices on construction sites.

However, according to Allianz Engineering, they may prove to be ineffective.

Under the terms of the rules laid out by the HSE - which exists to reduce the risks that arise to people's wellbeing as a result of workplace activities - there will be a register of conventional tower cranes and employers will have a duty to inform the executive of relevant information.

This will include the site location and the name and address of the crane owners.

While the scheme will track the whereabouts of cranes, it will not address the problem of errors being made in the installation and examination of the devices, Allianz Engineering claimed.

The organisation's Phil Wright said: "We are not convinced that these laws will make a substantial difference to safety figures in the sector."
