Mesothelioma sufferers to be given increased compensation

The amount of compensation received by sufferers of the asbestos-related disease mesothelioma is to rise.
Under new measures announced by the government, such people will get around 40 per cent more money.
From April, lump sum payments from the 2008 Mesothelioma Scheme will increase to the same level as those paid under the Pneumoconiosis Workers Compensation Act 1979.
This means that those who developed the condition as a result of exposure to asbestos outside of the workplace will receive the same as those exposed at their place of employment.
Responding to the move, Bill McKenzie from the Department for Work and Pensions said: "Mesothelioma devastates lives and causes great suffering to hundreds of individuals and their families."
He added that the additional money will help those affected by the hazardous insulting material during "extremely difficult times".
As well as mesothelioma, asbestos can cause pleural plaques and asbestosis, among other things.
