Britons 'to pay billions in unnecessary tax'

Nearly 90 per cent of people in the UK will not do anything to reduce their tax burden this year, with £9 billion set to be wasted as a result. Research by Unbiased.co.uk indicated that tax credits alone will see consumers unnecessarily lose out on £4 billion, with inheritance tax costing people almost £2 billion that could have remained in their pockets. The organisation argued that Britons are unaware of their tax apathy in many cases, particularly as one-third expect increases after the general election and a similar number say policies in this area could affect their vote. Calling for taxpayers to ensure they are taking advantage of incentives and avoiding fines for mistakes, chief executive of the site Karen Barrett said: "While things may be starting to look up in 2010, it is still vital for everyone to be looking at their finances and making sure they're not throwing money away unnecessarily." Last week, the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group urged employees and pensioners to check coding notices to ensure the right amount of tax is being deducted.
