Men 'more likely to become insolvent'

Male consumers are more likely to enter into insolvency than their female counterparts, it has been suggested.

According to research conducted by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), 55.4 per cent of those it recommended individual voluntary arrangements to last year were men.

In addition, 51.4 per cent of the people it advised to become bankrupt were male.

The organisation - which is a registered charity designed to provide people experiencing financial difficulties with free, impartial advice - also noted that the total number of men who went bankrupt in 2008 was 37,972.

This was higher than the comparable figure for women, which stood at 23,173.

Responding to the figures, CCCS spokeswoman Frances Walker said: "This may be the one equality which women may not want to aspire to."

She went on to urge people worried about rising levels of debt to seek assistance as soon as possible.
