Workplace accidents 'common in food and drink industry'

The accident rate for workers in the food and drink manufacturing industry is high, it has been claimed,
According to Aviva, although construction is generally regarded as the most dangerous sector in this respect, there are in fact more injuries suffered proportionally among workers involved in food and drink production.
Indeed, such people are 1.6 times more likely to suffer an injury, figures produced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show.
Over the last decade, 33 people were killed in the sector, it was noted.
"When you look at the bigger picture, including serious and minor injuries ... food and drink workers are more likely to be involved in an accident than construction workers," stated Brian Wallace, head of Aviva Risk Management Solutions.
HSE figures also show that, over the course of 2008-09, there were around 246,000 reportable injuries suffered by UK workers.
This was a fall from the 299,000 recorded during the previous year.
