Peers vote in favour of civil partnership amendment

Peers in the House of Lords have voted in favour of an amendment to the equality bill which will enable same-sex couples to get married in religious venues.
Under the terms of the alteration, such places will be able to host civil partnerships, although they will not be forced to.
Responding to the development, Chris Campbell, an elder at Maidenhead United Reform Church, said it was "fantastic", the BBC reports.
He added: "All churches need to start having prayerful discussions before deciding a way forward that's right for them."
Mr Campbell, who has been in a same-sex relationship for two years, is now considering entering a civil partnership himself.
He said while it was not possible to do so in a religious setting, it did not feel right.
Introduced by the Labour government, such unions are designed to provide gay couples with the same rights as heterosexual married partners with regards to a number of things, including employment benefits.
