People 'should check their tax statuses'

Individuals have been advised to check the details of the tax they are charged.
Noting that the new tax year is approaching, the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) suggested people assess whether the levy charged on their wages or pensions is correct.
For example, students working only during holidays who believe they will not exceed their personal allowances (which is £6,475) should ask to complete a P38(S) form, which allows payments to be made without tax deductions.
In addition, self-employed people whose incomes have been reduced should consider claiming to reduce their payments, it said.
The group remarked: "You can claim to reduce self-assessment payments on account at any time, but the tax year end is a good time to consider doing so."
Formed in 1998 as a continuation of an initiative started by John Andrews, the LITRG aims to provide a voice to taxpayers who could not afford to pay for advice.
