Mergers and acquisitions activity 'falls in UK'

Mergers and acquisitions activity involving companies in the UK fell during the final quarter of last year, it has been claimed.
According to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), expenditure on acquisitions abroad declined from £2.5 billion in the third quarter to £0.9 billion during the last three months.
This was the lowest level reported since the ONS began compiling records over two decades ago.
The organisation - which is the is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority - also revealed that the total value of acquisitions abroad by British businesses over 2009 as a whole was £9.9 billion.
Meanwhile, expenditure on takeovers of UK firms by other companies based in the country decreased from £1.9 billion in the third quarter to £1.3 billion between October and December.
For the year as a whole, the value of such activity was £12.1 billion, which was the lowest level since 1994.
