Senior bishops call for civil partnership change

A number of senior clergy from the Anglican church have called for changes in the rules governing civil partnerships.
In a letter to the Times, the bishops requested alterations to enable such unions to take place in churches, synagogues and other religious venues.
At present, the law is unfair because it does not permit gay couples the same rights as heterosexual ones, they suggested.
They said: "To deny people of faith the opportunity of registering the most important promise of their lives in their willing church or synagogue, according to its liturgy, is plainly discriminatory."
In response, a spokesman for the Equalities Office - which takes the lead on issues relating to women, sexual orientation and transgender equality matters - said it is right the government discusses the issue.
He added that it is an important topic and the implications need to be fully considered. For this reason, the views from all perspectives will be listened to.
