Pleural plaques ruling 'is bad news'

The recent decision by Jack Straw that sufferers of pleural plaques will not be eligible for compensation is bad news for workers, it has been suggested.
Writing in the Guardian, Peter Lazenby said that the move will have negative consequences for those who go on to develop mesothelioma.
Both of the medical conditions are related to previous exposure to asbestos and, while pleural plaques are not life-threatening, people with the disease can go on to develop mesothelioma, which is an incurable cancer.
Once diagnosed, this can progress rapidly and sufferers often do not have enough time to go through the legal process of establishing liability with employers.
When individuals were able to gain payouts for pleural plaques, this would already have been determined, meaning if they went on to develop cancer, liability would already have been made known.
As well as pleural plaques and mesothelioma, the hazardous insulating material is associated with asbestosis, among other things.
