Debt recovery techniques 'should be improved'

The techniques currently involved in debt recovery should be improved, it has been claimed.
According to AdviceUK, Citizens Advice, the Institute of Money Advisers and the Money Advice Trust, the credit industry should share best practice in the collection of money owed.
In a new report, the organisations noted five steps creditors should take, involving helping people pay their debts in a way that suits their circumstances.
Doing so helps all parties, including the organisations that are seeking to get their money back, it claimed.
Speaking at an event to launch the report, consumer affairs minister Kevin Brennan said: "I'm pleased to welcome this new report, it identifies a number of practical steps that can improve debt collection practices."
The politician, who took up his current role in October last year, added that it is "absolutely vital" that when people are struggling to give back money they owe, they get the advice and support they require.
