Forced retirement 'should be scrapped'

The government should get rid of mandatory retirement legislation, a charity has claimed.
Age Concern and Help the Aged challenged all parties to commit to axing the law which permits employers to make workers over the age of 65 give up their roles.
The organisation, which is due to change its name to Age UK this spring, issued its message as part of its pre-election manifesto, urging all political parties to commit to such measures.
It cited figures suggesting that a total of around 100,000 older staff members were made to retire last year.
Director Michelle Mitchell, said: "Our survey clearly shows the use of forced retirement has spiralled out of control offering some employers a low-cost shortcut to shed jobs during the recession."
She went on to claim that the default retirement law is currently "the most disturbing" example of age discrimination in the UK and it is not acceptable.
