Construction workers issued industrial disease warning

Construction workers in the north-west of England have been issued a warning over industrial diseases.
Employees based in Liverpool are the target of a new message from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) concerning the dust that is generated when people cut stone, concrete or masonry.
According to the organisation - which exists to reduce the risks to people's wellbeing that arise as a result of workplace activities - more than 500 construction workers die each year as a result of exposure to silica dust.
Moira Caddick from the HSE remarked: "Construction companies should ... avoid creating dust from stone, concrete or masonry wherever possible and make sure workers always wear suitable dust masks."
The lives of hundreds of employees and their families are "devastated" each year by lung diseases caused by the substance, she added.
In order to raise awareness of the issue, the HSE held an event yesterday in Liverpool focussing on silica dust.
