Number of marriages in 2008 'remained stable'

The number of married couples in England and Wales in 2008 remained stable compared with the previous year, it has been revealed.
According to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the provisional number of marriages registered over the 12-month period was 232,990 and it is estimated that a further one per cent of marriage returns will be received from register offices and the clergy over the coming year.
This means final data will be available in spring time next year.
It was also found that 63 per cent of all marriages were the first for both partners.
The ONS - which serves to produce independent information to improve understanding of the UK's economy and society - said the rate at which people get hitched has declined on the whole over recent decades.
However, there was a time between 2002 and 2004 when marriages increased.
The 2008 number so far represents the lowest since 1895, when 228,204 such unions occurred between couples.
