Recession 'has caused rise in unfair dismissal claims'

The number of workers making claims of unfair dismissal has increased as a result of the recession, it has been suggested.
According to HR firm Deminos, employers are trying to make cost savings and are committing errors concerning their duties towards staff members.
Neil Atkinson, managing director at the organisation - which has offices in cities such as London, Bristol, and Manchester - commented: "Changing working conditions can be a tricky business. While many employees agree to make changes to their working patterns to keep their jobs safe, contractually there can be issues."
He went on to note that businesses should check contracts and seek advice before imposing "desperate measures" to keep themselves on track.
Mr Atkinson's remarks follow the release of Tribunals Service statistics last week, which showed that the number of unfair dismissal claims brought by UK employees rose by 29 per cent in the 2008-09 period compared with the previous year.
Also, grievances over breach of contracts totalled around 33,000 over the same time.
Lamport Bassitt partner Jonathan Gray said: "The time limits within which to take action in employment disputes are very tight.
"An employee who wants to claim they have been unfairly dismissed must lodge a complaint with an employment tribunal within three months less one day of the date of dismissal."
