BA-American Airlines merger 'a step closer'

The proposed merger between carrier giants British Airways (BA) and American Airlines has moved a step closer after authorities in the US gave the deal the green light.

Those who oppose the move now have 45 days in which to formalise an explanation as to why it should not go ahead.

In a new development, the Department of Transportation said that the companies, along with their oneworld alliance partners Royal Jordanian Airlines, Iberia and Finnair, would have to give up four pairs of take-off and landing slots at Heathrow if the merger takes place.

Eight years ago, a proposed deal between BA and American Airlines fell through after conditions were specified under which 16 such slots would have had to have been sacrificed.

Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic - which has been in operation for a quarter of a century - has criticised the merger.

He described it as a "real kick in the teeth for consumers".
