Govt measures 'helping those close to insolvency'

Measures implemented by the government have helped consumers who are close to insolvency and are at risk of losing their homes.

This is according to Ian Boden-Smyth, a spokesperson for the UK Insolvency Helpline, who said that initiatives introduced by the Labour administration to make repossession a last resort have "helped provide an olive branch" to struggling Britons.

His remarks were made in the wake of the release of figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders which showed that the total number of possessions rose to 46,000 in the last year, but such activity decreased in the final quarter.

Commenting on the government's efforts, Mr Boden-Smyth said: "They have got mortgage rescue schemes, they are spending money on debt advice services and they have got it spot on in terms of money advice and welfare."

Recently, Ian Potter, operations manager at the Association of Residential Letting Agents, claimed that unemployment has been the primary factor behind rental arrears throughout the recession.
