Report calls for more tax breaks for married couples

Married couples in the UK should benefit from greater tax breaks, an organisation has suggested.
In a new report, charity Care claims the government should provide more financial support to families.
The organisation, which aims to bring insight and experience from a Christian perspective to matters of public policy, said that in the US, a one-earner married couple with two children pays on average 48.2 per cent of the tax charged to single people with no family responsibilities.
In contrast, the same family in the UK pays 75 per cent of the tax levied on single workers.
"The tax system does not recognise the family unit. It sees taxpayers as individuals, regardless of their family circumstances. This is immensely damaging to the social fabric of the country," stated report co-author Leonard Beighton.
Care released the suggestions in time to coincide with National Marriage Week, which it noted is supported by various charities and think tanks.
