Asbestos levels in schools "unacceptable"

Head teachers could be opening themselves up to asbestos compensation claims due to an overall lack a properly managed strategies to tackle the issue, it has been claimed.
According to the Independent on Sunday, a recent Asbestos Testing and Consultancy Association report found that the problem is prevalent nationwide.
It noted that in some academic institutions, particles of the material were floating in the air after being disturbed by builders and many senior staff members followed outdated containment procedures.
Personnel training on the issue was revealed to be "either poor or non-existent", the organisation claimed.
"It is not therefore surprising that the standards of asbestos management were unacceptable in the majority of schools," the body added.
The Independent on Sunday stated that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) deny there is an increased risk to teachers of asbestos-related health problems.
Earlier this month, the HSE issued a warning to company owners to ensure they are well educated on the dangers of asbestos before planning construction work.
