HSE issues warning over workplace injuries

A campaign aimed at reducing injuries in the workplace has been renewed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Fresh research from the body indicated the problems slips, trips and falls have caused, with these types of accident contributing to two deaths in the east of England last year. This is in addition to 1,250 major injuries, with 2,650 employees having to take at least three days off work as a result. The cost to society is thought to be around £800 million annually and the Shattered Lives campaign has been re-launched in an effort to reduce the problem. "Making improvements need not cost the earth," said HSE head of operations in the east of England Simon Longbottom, adding that "simple" solutions are available. HSE figures for 2008-09 showed that a total of 180 people were killed at work, while workplace injury contributed to 4.7 million days being lost.
