Employment laws governing churches 'will remain unchanged'

The laws governing employment in the church will stay as they are, it has been stated.
According to minister for women and equality Harriet Harman, an attempt by the government to change the law on equality as it affects religious organisations has been abandoned.
The politician, who is also the MP for Camberwell and Peckham and deputy leader of the Labour Party, made her comments after the defeat in the House of Lords of an attempt to amend the Equality Bill.
It had been hoped by those behind the planned alterations that the ex¬emption for religious bodies from the existing legislation would be clarified to make sure it applied only to church ministers.
She stated: "We thought that it would be helpful for everyone involved to clarify the law and that is what the amendment that we brought forward aimed to do. That amend¬ment was rejected."
For this reason, the law will remain as it was, Ms Harman added.
