Home insurance claims 'rise due to cold weather'

The number of consumers having to go through the insurance claims handling process because of water damage caused by burst pipes has topped £35 million this winter.
This is according to Sainsbury's Home Insurance, which suggested that the industry has received almost 16,000 such claims since the onset of the cold snap two months ago.
Many areas of the UK experienced sustained snow and ice in a manner not witnessed for decades, with schools, businesses and homes badly affected.
Commenting on the issue, manager at the company Ben Tyte remarked: "There have certainly been more home insurance claims linked to water damage in recent weeks than we'd expect to see when the weather is milder."
Although a rise was also noted during last winter, this year's surge has been more "prolonged and intense", he added.
Mr Tyte pointed out that temperatures have fallen to lows of -22C at night in some areas of the country.
