New paternity leave rights 'a welcome development'

New paternity leave plans announced by the government are a welcome move, it has been suggested.

Under the terms of the proposals, new fathers will be allowed to take up to six months of parental leave while the baby's mother returns to work.

According to Becky Jarvis, policy officer at Families Need Fathers, men and women have been sharing childcare duties for many years but legislation has not always reflected this.

She remarked: "We're pleased that traditional gender roles of mothers as carers and fathers as breadwinners are no longer being reinforced with maternity and paternity leave."

However, there is still considerable progress to be made, Ms Jarvis added.

In order to give firms time to adjust to the changes - which come in response to a consultation on the subject held at the end of last year - the government will not implement the alterations until next year.

The new rights will be introduced for parents of children due on or after April 3rd 2011.
