Growing number of Muslim marriages 'may not be legally recognised'

There has been a rise in the number of young Muslims in Britain entering marriages that are not legally recognised.
This is the claim of the BBC Asian Network, which suggested that couples are having Islamic weddings but are failing to have the civil ceremony needed for the union to be recognised under British law.
One example is that of Shaheeda Khan, who wed her partner in a religious ceremony.
It was not until she was asked to produce her wedding certificate when enrolling at university that she realised her marriage was not recognised.
Legal expert Aina Khan commented: "The problem is extremely widespread and it's an increasing time bomb because it's affecting mostly young Muslims, who are under 30 or in their early 30s."
She pointed out that people have no legal marital rights in such cases if their partner leaves them or dies.
Recently, the Office for National Statistics revealed that the number of couples filing for divorce in England and Wales fell in 2008 by 2.5 per cent compared with the previous year.
