Couple seek to challenge ban on heterosexual civil partnerships

A straight couple who were denied the opportunity to have a civil partnership are fighting their case.
Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle were told they could not register their intention to have such a ceremony by Islington registry office because heterosexual people are barred from doing so.
Speaking to PinkNews.co.uk, Mr Freeman said they are taking their case to the European Court of Human Rights.
In order to file a joint application, the pair need three gay couples and two straight couples to join them.
Mr Freeman commented: "It's now just a people's rights thing. No one should be kept out of institutions because of their sexuality."
He went on to describe the rules which govern civil partnerships as "divisive".
In order for gay couples to enter such partnerships, they must formally give notice and, on the day of the event, they need to take at least two other people who can sign as witnesses.
