Mediation services "vital" in family conflict

When families are going through times of conflict, it is crucial that they have access to mediation services, it has been suggested.
Commenting on the issue, chief executive of the Children's Society Bob Reitemeier said that when such provisions are not available, children can become distressed.
His remarks were made in the wake of the publishing of research by the organisation and the University of York, which found that youngsters' wellbeing is more strongly influenced by levels of family conflict than by family structure.
Children who believed their families got along well had much higher average levels of wellbeing than those who did not, it discovered.
Mr Reitemeier commented: "Family conflict emerges in this study as a major cause of childhood unhappiness and so it is vital that families can get ... family mediation and counselling ... to help them resolve and avoid conflicts."
The Children's Society aims to prevent, rescue and support children who face fear or harm.
