HSE issues asbestos warning

Company owners should be extremely careful when planning building work if they are lacking in experience when it comes to health and safety issues, including those involving asbestos.
This was the message delivered by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the wake of the prosecution of a firm which put its workers at risk of asbestos-related diseases while working on a property in Bristol.
Inspector at the organisation Sue Adsett stated: "Landlords and property developers need to be very wary of organising construction work themselves if they haven't got appropriate experience of managing health and safety in building projects."
The HSE went on to point out that around 500,00 buildings built before the year 2000 could contain asbestos, but when managed properly, the substance need not pose a risk to health.
There are a number of diseases associated with exposure to dust from the insulating material, including mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural plaques.
Lamport Bassitt partner Lynn Webb remarked: "We have known for many years that asbestos (originally thought to be a miracle mineral) was a time bomb waiting to happen.
"Thousands have been disabled or have died consequent to the health effects of asbestos and reported cases of individuals suffering from an asbestos-related disease continue to increase."
