Equal pay progress 'should be faster'

Progress towards achieving equal pay for men and women should be faster, it has been claimed.

According to Tatjana Hine, vice-president of the World Association of Women Entrepreneurs, female employees have steadily worked to narrow the margin but the difference in average levels of remuneration remains "reasonably wide".

She added: "The progress should be faster, in my opinion". However, she went on to acknowledge that women work differently to men.

Ms Hine remarked: "They don't necessarily wish to do quite so many hours."

If there were as many females who wanted to go and work in the City, for example, the pay gap would decrease because of the high levels of wages paid to people who are employed there, she pointed out.

According to an executive summary from the National Equality Panel published recently, over the course of the last ten years the earnings gap has narrowed somewhat but the large inequality growth of the 1980s has not been reversed.

Lamport Bassitt partner Jonathan Gray commented: "The path to equal pay has been a long one bearing in mind the Equal Pay Act came into force nearly 35 years ago.

"In addition, a number of local authorities still need to conclude the single status process that has been running for many years. Greater transparency in pay structures should assist in expediting matters."
