Charity criticises insurance decision made by govt

A decision made by the government to allow insurers to continue legally discriminating against people on the basis of age has been criticised by a charity.
Age Concern and Help the Aged - which is to change its name to Age UK this spring - made its comments after the Government Equalities Office recommended that cover providers should be allowed to continue using upper age limits and to refuse quotes.
It did so in response to a consultation on part of the Equality Bill.
Andrew Harrop, head of public policy at Age Concern and Help the Aged, remarked: "It defies belief that in 2010 a business is still able to refuse to deal with someone because of the date on their birth certificate."
The government should insist that mainstream insurers serve people of all ages, he added.
Not only is discriminating on the basis of age bad for older consumers, it is also bad for business, he claimed.
