Pub workers 'risking permanent hearing loss'

People employed in pubs and clubs may be at risk of suffering permanent hearing loss, two organisations have warned.
According to the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), more than half a million such people are exposed to loud music for long periods of time.
According to TUC health and safety officer Hugh Robertson, if the owners of bars and clubs do not begin to protect their staff members from the dangers of excess noise, they will end up in court.
He added: "The industry must get its act together quickly before it's hit with a huge wave of compensation claims and enforcement action."
The TUC and RNID - which acts as a campaigning and lobbying organisation, as well as a service provider, trainer and supplier of products and equipment - have called on local authorities and the Health and Safety Executive to carry out noise assessments in clubs and pubs.
