HMRC 'should be more proactive over tax code problems'

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) should do more to alert people in the UK to the fact that they may have the wrong tax code.
This is according to Chartered Institute of Taxation, which is calling on the department to be more proactive in this regard.
The institute, which was established in 1930 and is a professional body for taxation, suggested that a publicity campaign should be mounted to highlight the fact that wrong information is being sent out to many people.
Its president, Andrew Hubbard, said: "Most people on PAYE are used to assuming that what the taxman sends them is correct. Many file away coding notices without even bothering to check them."
However, many people receive incorrect details and, unless they spot it, they could get a "nasty shock" when they open their pay packets in April and discover they are significantly lighter than they were expecting.
