Civil partnership amendment proposed by peer

A member of the House of Lords has proposed amendments to the Equality Bill concerning civil partnerships. Lord Waheed Alli tabled an amendment to the bill, which is currently being scrutinised in parliament, under which the prohibition on such ceremonies occurring in religious buildings would be removed, PinkNews.co.uk reports.
Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall, gave his support for the campaign.
He remarked: "We know that there are many lesbian and gay people of faith who want to celebrate their civil partnerships in religious premises."
Mr Summerskill went on to state that given there are religions that wish to permit this, such as Quakers, there is "absolutely no reason" why politicians should not support the proposal.
Stonewall was established in 1989 by a group of people who had been active in opposing Section 28 of the Local Government Act, which was designed to prevent the so-called 'promotion' of homosexuality in schools.
