Firms 'are legally obliged to protect workers' safety'

Firms have a legal obligation to protect the safety of their staff members and a failure to do so will result in prosecution.
This was the message delivered recently by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which pointed out that workplace injuries can have a "devastating impact" on the lives of victims.
Its comments were made after a company from Liverpool was fined in relation to an incident in which a worker had four of his fingers cut off by a guillotine.
HSE inspector Martin Paren said the business should have ensured that a guard was fitted to the device.
He added: "This extremely serious incident demonstrates how important it is for manufacturing companies to have automatic safety systems, so that the risk of workers being injured is significantly reduced."
According to HSE figures, a total of 246,000 reportable injuries were sustained by UK employees over the course of 2008-09.
