HSE: Systems must be in place when using machinery

Firms must ensure they have safe working systems in place when their staff members are dealing with machinery.
This was the message delivered by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the wake of the prosecution of a company in relation to the death of an employee.
The individual suffered fatal crush injuries to the head while driving a mini digger which he was not qualified to operate.
HSE inspector Martin Lee said: "This terrible incident highlights the extremely serious risks posed by equipment and vehicles on sites if the workers using them don't have adequate training or are not versed in safe working procedures."
He added that it is "imperative" that site managers know which workers are qualified to operate machinery and ensure that control systems are in place.
According to the HSE, a total of 180 people in the UK lost their lives in 2008-09 as a result of accidents in the workplace.
