Firms 'failing to comply with fire safety legislation'

Many businesses around the UK may be endangering the lives of their staff and customers by failing to comply with fire safety laws, according to Aviva Risk Management Solutions (Arms).
Government figures cited by the organisation suggest that 40 per cent of companies are contravening the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which was implemented three years ago.
Arms health and safety consultant Andrew Couch pointed out that this is not going unnoticed by the authorities and is leading to enforcement action.
He stated: "And an increased level of audit activity focusing more on higher risk premises such as care homes, hotels and hospitals will bring more and more firms under the spotlight."
Failing to conduct fire risk assessments means that companies are not only breaking the law but are also not managing the hazards on their premises, he added.
The Health and Safety Executive provides information which firms can use to ensure they do not contravene fire safety regulations.
