Home insurance claims 'surge during icy weather'

The number of consumers claiming on their home insurance rose significantly during the icy conditions seen over recent weeks, a cover provider has noted.
According to M&S Home Insurance, there were three times more home emergency claims this winter compared with the summer months.
Head of the organisation David Wells pointed out that this included a 200 per cent jump in applications for water damage compensation, with burst pipes responsible for many of these.
He added: "We're expecting the number of claims to increase throughout January and February as the severe weather puts a greater strain on central heating systems and household plumbing systems."
Mr Wells went on to point out that people who lack emergency insurance cover may have to foot large bills if they experience plumbing problems as a result of the freezing temperatures.
The weather has become milder across many parts of the UK but forecasters have predicted there will be more snow this week.
