Default retirement age a waste, expert says

Employment laws governing the default retirement age in the UK result in talent being wasted, it has been claimed.

According to pensions expert Dr Ros Altmann, such legislation needs to be replaced by more progressive rules.

She made her comments after deputy leader of the Labour Party Harriet Harman revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail that a "massive policy change" is to take place concerning the laws.

Currently, workers can be forced to leave their roles at the age of 65 without redundancy pay even if they wish to remain in their positions.

Dr Altmann said: "We are wasting so much of our precious national resource by forcing people to retire before they might be ready."

She went on to claim that pension funds amassed by employees may not be enough to sustain them in their later years and so other sources of money need to be considered.

Jonathan Gray from Lamport Bassitt remarked: "Although the government was able to justify the age of 65 in the recent High Court challenge made by Age Concern, this is unlikely to remain the case in the future, particularly when the state retirement age is set to rise above 65."ADNFCR-1678-ID-19557307-ADNFCR
