Icy weather 'causes rise in insurance claims'

More people than usual have had to claim on their insurance over the past few days because of the snowy weather, according to one policy provider.

Swiftcover.com saw the number of motorists phoning up to make a claim rise by 75 per cent compared with the same period last year, as car accidents became more frequent with the icy conditions on the roads.

The company said that some of its staff had to stay in at a hotel near its offices in order to make sure they could get in to deal with the deluge of claims, while others abandoned their cars and trudged through the snow.

Robin Reames, director of claims for swiftcover.com, explained: "The severity of the snow this week caught many people by surprise and resulted in lots of drivers having accidents and problems with their cars, which in turn meant a record number of people contacting swiftcover.com for help or to make a claim."

The Press Association recently reported that although the worst of the extreme weather is over, there may still be more snow to come in some areas of the UK tomorrow (January 12th).
