Calls made for end of offshore tax evasion

A government minister has issued a call for perpetrators of offshore tax evasion to stop the practice.
According to Treasury minister Stephen Timms, such behaviour is "morally unacceptable" and it "robs public services of funding", as well as placing an unfair burden on honest taxpayers.
The politician acknowledged that the temptation to continue with such evasion will remain for some individuals, adding that, for this reason the government is bringing forward measures this year to tackle the crime.
Mr Timms, who took up his current role in October 2008, make his comments as HM Revenue and Customs announced that around 10,000 people had notified it of their intention to disclose previously undeclared offshore income and gains.
He pointed out that those who came forward prior to January 4th were able to take advantage of the disclosure opportunity, which has now closed, but went on to recommend that individuals still make themselves known if they are evading tax.
Penalties are lower when a person draws attention to the fact voluntarily, he said.
