Tax changes for personal imports implemented

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has implemented changes to personal import allowances.
As a result of the alterations, the value of goods that travellers can personally bring into the UK from non-European Union destinations has increased.
The rise also applies to items received through the post, the government department pointed out.
People entering the country via commercial sea or air transport can bring up to £390 worth of goods for personal use, without being subject to customs duty or VAT. This excludes tobacco and alcohol.
Those arriving by other means, such as private planes or boats for pleasure purposes, can bring in items worth up to £270.
HMRC, which was formed following the merger of Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise departments, also pointed out that consumers who purchase products over the internet or by mail order will now only be charged customs duty if the value of the package is in excess of £135.
